Unlike the military, first responder units (LE, Fire/Rescue) face many structural obstacles to a strong fitness culture including:
- union resistance
- lack of training facilities and equipment
- no time on-duty to train
- “legacy” members well into their 50s and 60s
- no mandatory, high stakes, fitness assessment
- lack of command encouragement/support
In working with individual first responders and units over the years, we’re learned a lot about first responder fitness cultures and I’ve developed a measurable steps which indicate increasing elements of a strong fitness culture. These are outlined below.
