Rob Shaul
Founder & President

Rob is a lifelong gym rat turned self-educated strength and conditioning coach specializing in tactical and mountain athletes. As the Founder and Head Coach of Mountain Tactical Institute, he has established himself as a leading authority in the field. With a strong emphasis on sport-specific program design, Rob works closely with professional mountain guides, alpine climbers, freeskiers, kayakers, backcountry hunters, and a diverse range of athletes.

Rob’s expertise extends to training military, law enforcement, and firefighter personnel from various countries. He has conducted comprehensive strength and conditioning programming for elite forces such as Navy SEALs, Army Green Berets, Air Force Combat Controllers, Air Force PJs, Army and Air Force EOD, federal and state law enforcement SWAT teams, as well as urban and wildland firefighters. His contributions include the development of highly effective pre-deployment programs that have benefited numerous military individuals and units worldwide. Notably, Rob has played a pivotal role in pioneering “Mission-Direct” Research, which has significantly influenced training programs to optimize athlete performance at Mountain Tactical Institute.

Under Rob’s leadership, Mountain Tactical Institute has gained well-deserved recognition as one of the top gyms in the United States, garnering accolades from publications such as Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, and Outside Magazine.

Rob is a 1990 graduate of the US Coast Guard Academy and served as a deck officer in the Coast Guard before returning to his home state of Wyoming to begin his 30+ year career as an entrepreneur. He has a Masters Degree from the University of Wyoming and a CSCS with the NSCA.

Charlie Bausman
Chief Operating Officer

Charlie brings experience as a tactical athlete, coach, and in business to contribute to the success of Mountain Tactical Institute and its athletes.

His business background includes operations roles at Amazon corporate and tech startups, as well as running his own small business. As a coach at Mountain Tactical Institute, Charlie worked with high-level Mountain and Tactical Athletes providing coaching, programming, and leading research projects for athletes across the globe.

As a tactical athlete, Charlie served as a Marine Infantry Officer for five years followed by four years of service as a full-time Firefighter/EMT. Over a decade, he has also dedicated himself to the disciplines of Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing, and Muay Thai. He is an avid mountain biker and subpar fisherman. 

He resides in Missoula, Montana, alongside his wife and son. He is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditining Specialist (CSCS) amongst other S&C Certifications. Currently, he is pursuing an MBA at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business


Mintra Tilly
MTI Beta Jedi

Mintra began her career as a coach training US Army Soldiers stationed in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Her focus was on improving their physical fitness, particularly for Special Teams participating in Military Competitions and SFAS Candidates preparing for selection.

She made history in June 2013 by becoming the first female S&C Coach for the Hamburg Freezers, a prominent first-division male hockey team based in Hamburg, Germany. Her expertise and dedication played a vital role in optimizing the team’s performance.

In 2016, Mintra authored “Strong is Sexy,” a book aimed at empowering female athletes. The book received praise for its practical guidance and motivational content.

Following the birth of her daughter in 2016, Mintra shifted her focus but remained involved in the sporting world. She designed the sporting concept behind HYROX, a global fitness race event series, and continues to provide valuable consultation to the team.

Mintra holds a degree in Business Administration and is a certified S&C Coach recognized by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
