Q&A 2.22.24

QUESTION

I had talked to you last year about Field Medical Training Batallion workouts to prepare for it. You recommended some training plans and managed to do it for quite a while, however I have been working as an ICU/Trauma Center Corpsman for a year and the 12 hour shifts and many days of work sometimes has really hurt my training. I can’t have consistency nor continous days of training due to the nature of this job. I was hoping you could help out and recommend something that can still help me prepare and be in a fairly good rucking and running shape say 7 min/mile or better. I have only 3 days a week to train. I’d greatly appreciate it, Rob

ANSWER

Running-specific option:
10K Run Improvement Training Plan. Skip the strength training in the plan and follow the plan in order as prescribed when you can train. Don’t skip running sessions.
All Around option:
Busy Dad Limited Equipment 1 Training Plan – all around training – 45m sessions.
– Rob

QUESTION

I’m finishing up week two of the Smokejumper Selection program and I’m really enjoying it so far. I was able to get 3 good hikes in, but a northeastern has iced me out of all the mountains within 2 hours of me. Are there any decent substitutes for rucking on hilly terrain that you can think of?

ANSWER

Jump on the treadmill with your pack and jack up the elevation %. Not ideal, but it’ll work.

QUESTION

I am starting the Operator Apollo plan and had a question about the Hinge Lift.  Is it incorrect to think of this lift as closer related to a RDL than that of a Dead Lift?  I am more familiar with RDL’s as I never really did Dead Lifts in any high school sports program weight room growing up.  I am just trying to ensure I have the proper concept and intention of the movement.  Any feedback is appreciated.

ANSWER

These videos gives some good coaching cues on how to execute the lift. You are right, it’s closer to a RDL than a deadlift, but with a slightly greater knee bend. We’re really shooting to isolate the posterior chain and protect the low back.

QUESTION

I have a question regarding the HRT Selection program. Does it lead up to the week before selection? Just curious. Thanks and God bless.

ANSWER

That’s correct, it should be completed directly leading up to selection. The program includes a de-load week so you show up fresh and ready to go.

QUESTION

Good Afternoon, I am an MS4 Army ROTC Cadet commissioning into the Infantry in May. I have one week left of the Ultimate Meathead Program and freakin love it. I should get my IBOLC date soon, but it’s looking like June, July, or August. I also recently found out that I will attend CAAS before IBOLC, likely in May or June. Any recommendations for programming? I am in relatively good shape, usually scoring 600 on the ACFT, and would like to have a stronger running foundation. I can hit the 3 hr 12 mile ruck and 1.5 hr 6 mile consistently, but am hoping to cut my times down a lot in those areas.

ANSWER

Got it. With your current timeline, I’d recommend starting the Ranger School Training Plan after you finish up Ultimate Meathead. Sounds like this will line up perfectly in terms of your school dates. This will more than prepare you for CAAS/IBOLC, and set a strong foundation going into Ranger. https://mtntactical.com/shop/ranger-school-training-plan/

QUESTION

Dear Rob and the Gang, I feel like that former flame calling you up after the Superbowl, drunk on punch and low from my team’s loss, to see about training with you again. But seriously, I am circling back to MTI after taking some time away to do some other things and I can’t seem to find the handy “tree” with all the programs on it to find what I’m looking for so I’ll ask the question. I’m leaning more toward a “hybrid training” system where I can focus on strength and my running/cycling together. Although not ideal, I want it all and there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete everything I want to do. I am considering using your Meathead or TLU Strength training program. What are your thoughts on utilizing either program for the purpose I presented, and are there other options I am overlooking? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER

Great game, wasn’t it? The best option is going to be our Max Effort Strength + 6 Mile Run training plan (https://mtntactical.com/shop/max-effort-strength-6-mile-run-training-plan-copy/) . We have a few of these that utilize the same strength movements/progressions, but focus on a different run distance. Ultimate Meathead with a bunch of extra conditioning volume is going to be a lot. TLU is more doable, but I think something like the above mentioned plan would be the best fit.

QUESTION

Hi! I’d like to gift the 45+ program to my fiancé.

QUESTION

Hi, im in AD Army, due to an Achilles tendon injury i was unable to run. I try cardio machines (fan bike, skiers, rower…) i try to run to assess myself and gas out and out of breath in less than 400 meter and company run i fall out of the run…browsing your progam i notice a few option but not sure where to start to improve the aerobic capacity and my endurance and build up to a 5 mile run…

ANSWER

Good Morning, Start with the 2-mile improvement plan to get back into the swing of things. For the assessment, you’ll need to slow down to a pace that you can complete the 2 mile assessment. No work around on that unfortunately. (https://mtntactical.com/shop/2-mile-run-improvement-training-plan/?highlight=run%20improvement)

QUESTION

I am doing the glacier peak climb w RMI this summer. It’s a longer and heavier approach vs rainier but less elevation. My plan was to start with the mountaineering/hiking prep plan and then probably the daily sessions with one of the plans leading up to the climb. My question is which plan would be best for this? Thanks!

ANSWER

You have a good plan. Use the Big Mountain Training Plan for your event-specific training, starting 10-weeks prior to leaving for the Glacier Peak climb. (https://mtntactical.com/shop/big-mountain-training-program/)
