Crux Mountain Award Deadline is March 31, 2016

By Rob Shaul

The first quarter deadline for MTI’s Crux Mountain Awards is less than two months away, midnight mountain time, March 31, 2016.

Thus far we’ve received nearly 10 applications for events and objectives ranging from submitting Everest, to a full Teton Range Traverse, 5 classic climbs in the Alaska Range, a 200-foot cliff jump on skis, and an alpine climb in Tasmania.

MTI’s Crux Mountain Awards exist to help athletes pursue unique, specific and ambitious mountain objectives. Awards range from $500-$2,000, across a broad range of categories:

Freeski/ride Mountaineering (combining technically challenging ski lines with technical mountaineering)

Whitewater Kayaking

Backcountry Hunting

Rock Climbing

Ice/Mixed Climbing

Alpine Climbing

Backcountry Snowmobiling

Mountain Running

Mountain Biking

Multi-Modal- combination of 2-3 of the above

Wild Card (for ideas that fall outside of these categories)

Awards are based upon:

(1) The ambition of the objective – is it at the edge of the individual athlete or team’s physical and technical abilities?

(2) Specificity of the Objective – what are the physical and technical details? How do these align with the athlete’s abilities?

(3) Originality – original trip objectives, routes, multi-modal events, etc. all help push the frontier of mountain sports and exploration.

The Crux Mountain Awards have rolling deadlines – one at the end of every quarter:

March 31

June 30

September 30

December 31

Applicants not selected for one quarter, will need to re-apply.
